Voidheart Symphony v0.6: Connection and Condition edition
over 3 years ago – Mon, Aug 24, 2020 at 07:23:37 PM

Hey folks! The new version is now up on itch.io at  https://ufo-mina.itch.io/voidheart-symphony

Here's the headline changes:

  • Changed out Wounds for Conditions - mental statuses that make life harder in the city and in the castle. With this being unified, there was no need for Return to Reality, and a whole host of moves that used to provide healing and comfort are now expressed via Conditions.
  • Updated Game Setup. Now there's a focus on building a relationship map instead of a city map. This relationship map is a presence throughout, tracking the growing network of people involved in your revolution and the ways the vassals are threatening it.
  • The Captive and Penitent are in the core book, and slightly revised from the playtest versions to bring them into alignment with the condition change.
  • Changed day-by-day timings. Now there's a greater focus on your Rebel's mundane life, and more of a flow between uptime and downtime.
  • Removed projects. Instead, you may have crises arising from your Role, and if they're still in coming by the end of the investigation you suffer. If you're free of crises, you instead receive some kind of boon.
  • Altered Travel the Labyrinth. Instead of accumulating Traces, there are now two different moves - one for exploring, and one for going somewhere specific.

And there's plenty of other smaller tweaks! Let me know if you have any issues accessing the new version, and also let me know what you think.

And as a reminder, if you want to be listed as a playtester, get in touch via Kickstarter message here, at [email protected], or join in with our discord community at https://discord.gg/UBSbZe

Progress Update
over 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 11, 2020 at 05:33:36 AM

Hey folks,

Hope you're all keeping well! Just a quick update today let you all know where things are at.

First up, we have a cover, from the excellent Adrian Stone. I'm very happy with it! I'm still putting together ideas for what the more minimalist Shadow Edition will look like, but I'll keep you posted.

So, how's production going? The last month has had me devoted to getting Shattered City done, but now that it's out to backers I'm turning my full focus on Voidheart Symphony. I've also been running a bunch of playtest campaigns, focusing on the day-to-day grind of the investigations and the overall campaign arc. I'm hoping to have a new version of the game out by the end of this month, including:

  • A revision of the day-to-day play of investigations, including more focus on your character's mundane lives and relationships.
  • A more freeform investigation structure, making it feel much less like ticking boxes to unlock the boss fight.
  • Shifting game setup from building a city map to building a relationship map - this is a game about communities and relationships, not maps and districts, and I think this'll really help focus the rules on the gameplay I want.
  • Shifting the harm/wound system to something like Masks' Conditions - five statuses that make particular moves harder in the castle and in the real world, and last until you or another rebel do something to clear them.
  • Rethinking Projects - it's a subsystem that's pretty complex for little benefit, and I think I can find a way to serve the same ends that's more tightly integrated with the core activities of the game.

And here's my production timeline now:

  • Mid-August: Release the next version of the game, final playtesting.
  • September: Send book text to editors.
  • October: Send out pre-print PDF to backers, charge Backerkit, collect feedback, send book to printers.
  • November-December: Print books and cards, post orders to backers worldwide.

The Penitent

Hey folks,

First up - it's been a tough week for anyone who cares about social justice and the fight for a better world. The cruel and racist actions of police departments across the US have cast into stark relief the urgent need for change - across the US, but also further abroad. If you care about the stories Voidheart Symphony is here to tell, I'd ask you to pay close attention to what's happening right now, listen and learn from the folks on the ground, keep pushing for justice even as the system cracks down or offers meaningless compromises and scapegoats, and give what you can to the groups working on all of this and putting together a dream of a better world. Here's some suggestions:

And if you want to grab some games while you send money to good causes, this bundle is a ludicrously good deal: https://itch.io/b/520/bundle-for-racial-justice-and-equality

The Penitent

That all was weighing heavily on my mind as I wrote this draft of the Penitent. This playbook presents a character who has realised the horror of the system they're complicit in, and dedicated themselves to its destruction - but their immersion in the castle still stains their actions.

How do you unpick the assumptions of a life of privilege? How do you wield the power you still retain, without causing collateral damage? Can you hold onto the fervour and compassion that lead to you taking a stand, or will you end up taking the easy way out?

And - I'm writing all this as someone who's white, university-educated, and British. I don't have the answers for how to be a good person who's completely cast off the mindset of white supremacy, colonialism and systemic inequality - only that the work is important, and the work is never done. If there's something in this that doesn't read right to you, or leaves a bad taste in your mouth, get in touch.

Penitent front side
Penitent reverse side

This is a pretty complex one, mechanically - a lot of its is mechanics are focused around twisting your options in the city, and governing the balance of penance and moral transgression.  But then, it's also a pretty complex character thematically, so I'm ok way that. If you want to play this character, it's important to be clear about what you're going for with them, what particular abuses you've inflicted before the story starts, and be sure that your group is alright with that.

Character Keeper and The Captive playbook
almost 4 years ago – Tue, Jun 02, 2020 at 07:44:22 AM

Hi,

I hope you're all well, and enjoying v0.5 of the game. To help with that, I've put together this updated google sheets character keeper - make a copy and use it in your own games!

I've also put together a draft of our first stretch goal playbook, The Captive (previously known as The Trapped and The Resident). You should be getting a link from Backerkit soon containing the PDF download! This one's a bit of a weird one, given that they can't interact with the city in the same way as the other rebels - in fact, they have their own special arcanum governing how their spooky mechanics work. Give it a look and let me know what you think!
